Coding (Computer Science)

Hour of Code

What is the hour of code?

The hour of code is a global movement created by our leading technologists of today, to introduce the world to computer science. It has reached tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Go to hourofcode.org for more info, or register for Code Camp being hosted by RGHS for a hands on experience.

Why is it important for girls to code?

Your daughter, niece or grandchild will learn how to be a creator of technology and not a consumer. It is important that females are represented in the technical innovations of our future instead of being a bystander.

What is code camp?

We are hosting the first Code Camp that has been offered in the Bay of Plenty. We have rescheduled the open Code Camp due to the lack of response from other schools, but we are exclusively running a camp for RGHS students only during Term 4 (6th - 8th December) from 8:30am - 3:30pm. The 3 day course usually costs $220pp, but due to funding (Ministry of Social Development and NPEW) it can be offered to 48 students for free. Code Camp will take you beyond "The hour of Code" and you will learn how to build apps, games and websites.

It is open to all RGHS students (year 9 to 13) so feel free to register but spaces are limited.

How do I register?

If you a student from RGHS:

1. Please pick up a permission slip from the front office, get your parent to sign and return to front office.

2. Register with Code Avengers through their website https://www.codeavengers.com/codecamp

If you are a student from another school:

1. YTC - We will notify your school of future Code Camps

What is coding?

Simply put, coding is a tool that allows you to create and express your creativity through technology. Everything on your phone, any game you have played, literally everything on the internet was created through code. As our future progresses to a more technological age, it is becoming an essential skill for the 21st century so the need for coding is only going to increase.

Who can learn how to code?

Everyone can learn how to code, from children to adults. It might be intimidating at first but it's not really that scary. It's like learning how to ride a bike, after you've learnt the basics, you'll be away in no time.

What can my daughter do with coding in the future?

Computer Science jobs are going to be one of the most fastest-paying and highest-paying sectors over the next decade, as coding provides girls with the necessary skills to build the next generation of software or technology that can be used in many areas from art to business to entertainment. She can literally help change the world today, by developing solutions to world wide problems in many fields or build the new best app on our phones. The opportunities are endless.
