Mobile Phone Policy
Policy B06A
RGHS requires students to comply with its new cell-phone procedure – Phones Away For The Day
Background:
B06B
Having given that direction there are however a number of situations where students may use or have
access to a cell-phone e.g.
1. for Health Reasons
2. for Disability or Language Learning Support needed
3. for when Teachers require students to use cell-phones for educational tasks or purposes
4. for other special circumstances.
Rotorua Girls’ High School with this new Government policy will adopt for Term 1, 2024 the following
procedure.
Objective:
B06C
The expectation is to prevent cell-phones from becoming a distraction to the teaching and learning of self
and others. At the same time, we do not want teachers losing valuable teaching time because they are
managing to a greater extent the use of cell-phones by students.
The school is supportive of providing boxes for each teacher to collect cell-phones in at the start of the
period.
Implementation:
B06D
1. Students must put their cell-phone on silent mode and in their bag or pocket but out of sight during
lessons and school activities.
Or
2. Students can hand their cell-phone to the teacher who will manage the device during lessons and
school activities on all-care basis.
The school is not responsible for any loss or damage caused to any cell-phone.
The main emphasis is that students are to put it “Away for the Day”.
Student agency in this matter will be promoted through assemblies, school bulletins, school Year level
Facebook pages to students as this is seen as the best way to encourage our students to adopt and
support this new regulation.
Visual images/symbols will be developed to message students around this procedure and the benefits of
putting their cell-phone away for the day.
Consequences:
B06E
1. Failure to put the cell-phone away or to hand in to teacher will see the teacher phoning home and
putting a note on KAMAR.
2. On the second occurrence, the cell-phone will be collected by the classroom teacher and held in the
school office attached to a cell-phone confiscation sheet until the end of the school day. The Year
Level Dean will contact home and an agreed strategy put in place to manage cell-phone use going
forward. This inappropriate use will be recorded in KAMAR.
3. On a third occurrence the cell-phone will be collected by the Year Level Dean and held in the school
office until the cell-phone is collected by a parent or guardian, the student will not be allowed to
bring their cell-phone to school. This further inappropriate use will be recorded in KAMAR.
4. This procedure relates to cell-phone use and not the use of devices.
